Rearranging a room and falsely awakening

Not stated · Date unknown · contemporary study

In the dream, I saw myself from the outside while I was moving objects around my room. At a certain point, I thought, "This book is not like this; I am in a dream." I then tried to perform reality checks, but I woke up—or at least I thought I had woken up, because I experienced a false awakening. In the dream, I wanted to do certain things but never managed to do them, and I kept waking up and falling asleep again.

Another way to look at this dream

Notes on the images in this dream from psychology, myth, folklore and semiotics. Each names its source.

House

Whose house was it — one you know, or one you only know in the dream? Which room did you spend the most time in?

Jung · The house as psyche

In 1909 Jung dreamed of a house whose cellar led down into older and older layers — Roman, then prehistoric. He later took it as an image of the psyche, with the oldest layers at the bottom.

C. G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1962)

Phenomenology Philosophy

Gaston Bachelard argued that the house “shelters daydreaming”: the attic and cellar of a childhood home stay with us as places to imagine from.

Bachelard, The Poetics of Space (1958)

Chinese fiction Literature

In chapter 5 of Dream of the Red Chamber, Baoyu dreams his way into the Land of Illusion, a palace of cabinets holding registers of the household’s fates.

Cao Xueqin, Dream of the Red Chamber, ch. 5

Book

Could you read the book? Did it belong to you, or did someone hand it over?

Hebrew prophets Myth & scripture

In a vision Ezekiel is handed a scroll written inside and out with “lamentations, and mourning, and woe”, told to eat it, and finds it “as honey for sweetness”. Taking a text into the body is how the message is received. (A vision, not a dream.)

Ezekiel 2:9–3:3 (King James Version)

Christian scripture Myth & scripture

In Revelation John is told to take a little book from an angel’s hand and eat it: sweet as honey in the mouth, bitter in the belly. The same book is both. (A vision, not a dream.)

Revelation 10:9–10 (King James Version)

Falling

Where were you standing before the fall? Were you reaching for something to hold, or letting go?

Jung · Descent

In his memoir Jung describes deliberately “letting himself drop” into an inner depth in 1913, and treated descent as a way of meeting what lies below everyday awareness — frightening, but not only a disaster.

C. G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1962)

Early dream research Dream research

Ellis explained falling dreams through bodily sensations at the edge of sleep. Sleep researchers today describe the related “hypnic jerk”, a sudden start while falling asleep.

Havelock Ellis, The World of Dreams (1911), ch. VI

Classical Chinese medicine Historical medicine

The same passage of the Lingshu pairs flying with falling: when the lower body is in excess, “one dreams of falling”. This is a historical theory about the body, not medical advice and not a way to diagnose anything.

Huangdi Neijing, Lingshu ch. 43 “Yinxie Fameng”
