People and pets in a large gym

Not stated · Date unknown · contemporary study

I was in a large gym. There were many people I knew and also some of my pets. A presentation or a speech was taking place, although that is not important. I think that awareness became activated when I started interacting with the people and when I became able to accept or reject the course of events. I am uncertain whether it was a lucid dream because I did not look for confirmation. Instead, I allowed myself to be carried along by the events, since they were positive and pleasant.

Notes on the images in this dream from psychology, myth, folklore and semiotics. Each names its source.

A stranger

Did the stranger remind you of anyone, even slightly? What did they want from you?

Jung · Shadow, anima and animus

Jung read unknown figures as possible parts of the dreamer: a same-sex stranger may carry the shadow; an other-sex figure what he called the anima or animus. These are offered as lenses, not labels — and his gender framing reflects his time.

C. G. Jung, “Aion, ch. 2–3”, Collected Works 9ii

Homeric epic Classical text

In Homer, gods and dreams arrive in borrowed shapes: Athena visits Nausicaa disguised as her friend; Zeus sends a Dream to Agamemnon looking like Nestor.

Odyssey VI; Iliad II

Stars

One star or a whole sky of them? Were they close, and did they make any shape you recognised?

Chinese historiography Classical text

The “Treatise on the Celestial Offices” in the Records of the Grand Historian maps the night sky onto the human world: groups of stars are named as officials of a heavenly court.

Sima Qian, Shiji, “Treatise on the Celestial Offices”

Roman philosophy Philosophy

Scipio, dreaming among the stars, finds them far larger than they look from Earth — the dream is a lesson in how small human glory is from far enough away.

Cicero, De re publica VI (“Dream of Scipio”)
